9000 Primary and Upper-Primary Schools to Be Shut in Andhra Pradesh
According to a reccent report near about 9,000 primary and upper-primary schools may be closed in Andhra Pradesh in the coming months this year. It could result in a big setback for children from poor families.

This decision if implemented could also have negative impact, resulting in major drop out rate arising out of the economically weaker sections in the society, a  report from The Times of India claims.

The Andhra government argues that this action is being initiated to strengthen school education. The government is planning to wind up mid level schools being run as upper primary schools where instruction is available up to class seven.

This is part of the government’s plan to cut budgetary support to the education department. The government is defending it's move by claiming that it will improve the student teacher ratio in the state.

It is a ridiculous move. It will only lead to a more dangerous trend of increase in the number of drop-outs, said Boddu Nageswara Rao, teachers’ MLC
